Bed Bugs: Identification and Elimination Guide

About Bed Bugs

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are small, parasitic insects that feed exclusively on blood β€” almost always human blood in domestic settings. They don’t transmit diseases but cause itchy, irritating bites and significant psychological distress. Once established, bed bugs are notoriously difficult to eliminate without professional help.

After being nearly eradicated in the US by the 1950s, bed bugs rebounded dramatically starting in the 1990s, driven by increased international travel and resistance to older pesticides. Today, they’re found in every US state and in hotels, homes, dormitories, hospitals, and public transportation.

Identification

Adult bed bugs are:

  • About the size of an apple seed (4-5mm, ΒΎ inch)
  • Oval, flat (or swollen after feeding), and reddish-brown
  • Visible to the naked eye but excellent at hiding in tiny spaces

Bed bug signs to look for:

  • Bites β€” red, itchy welts, often in a line or cluster. Reaction varies widely; some people don’t react at all
  • Fecal spots β€” tiny dark dots (digested blood) on mattress seams, sheets, and nearby furniture
  • Blood smears β€” rusty red stains on sheets from crushed bugs
  • Shed skins β€” translucent cast skins as bugs molt through five nymph stages
  • Live bugs β€” check mattress seams, box spring edges, furniture joints, electrical outlets, and picture frames

Prevention Tips

  1. Inspect hotel rooms β€” before unpacking, check the mattress seams, headboard, and furniture near the bed
  2. Use luggage racks β€” keep luggage off the floor and bed when staying in hotels
  3. Launder after travel β€” wash and dry all clothing on high heat immediately after returning home
  4. Use mattress encasements β€” bed bug-proof mattress and box spring covers eliminate the most common hiding spots
  5. Inspect used furniture β€” never bring upholstered furniture or mattresses into your home without thorough inspection
  6. Inspect packages and deliveries β€” bed bugs can hitchhike in shipping boxes

Treatment

Bed bug treatment is complex and almost always requires professional intervention:

Heat treatment β€” The entire structure or room is heated to 120Β°F+ for several hours. Kills all life stages. No insecticide resistance issues. Most effective when done professionally.

Chemical treatment β€” Multiple pesticide applications targeting cracks, crevices, furniture, and baseboards. Usually requires 2-3 visits. Combination products including insecticides, dusts, and IGRs are most effective.

DIY options β€” Portable bed bug heaters for treating luggage and bedding. Bed bug-proof encasements trap bugs and prevent new hiding. Diatomaceous earth in cracks and crevices as a supplemental measure.

When to Call a Professional

Bed bugs almost always require professional treatment. DIY approaches may reduce populations but rarely eliminate infestations completely due to the difficulty of reaching all hiding spots.
