Our Recommendation

Focus on yard personal larvicide prevention. The best pest control products work as part of an integrated approach β€” combining the right products with prevention and monitoring gives you the most effective, long-lasting results.

Understanding How Repellents Work

Most EPA-registered repellents work not by killing mosquitoes but by masking or interfering with the chemical cues mosquitoes use to find hosts. Female mosquitoes locate hosts through a combination of COβ‚‚ (exhaled breath), lactic acid and other skin volatiles, heat, and visual cues. Repellents disrupt this detection mechanism, making you effectively invisible to them.

DEET, the most widely used active ingredient, was developed by the US Army in 1946. Despite myths about safety, DEET has an exceptional safety record when used as directed. It remains the benchmark against which all other repellents are measured.

Repellent Comparison Guide

DEET (20-30% concentration)

  • Duration: 4-6 hours at 25%, longer at higher concentrations
  • Suitable for adults, children over 2 months (10% or lower for children)
  • Effective against mosquitoes, ticks, and other biting insects
  • Safe for use on skin and clothing

Picaridin (20%)

  • Duration: 8-12 hours for mosquitoes, 8 hours for ticks
  • Less oily feel than DEET, no damage to synthetic fabrics
  • Good choice for children and sensitive skin
  • CDC-recommended protection

Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (30%)

  • Duration: 6 hours comparable to low-concentration DEET
  • Plant-derived but NOT safe for children under 3 (despite natural label)
  • Less effective against ticks than DEET or Picaridin

IR3535 (20%)

  • Duration: 2-4 hours typically
  • European origin, widely used in travel products
  • Good mosquito protection, less research on tick protection

Application Best Practices

  • Apply repellent to exposed skin after sunscreen (apply sunscreen first, repellent second)
  • Spray on hands and then apply to face β€” never spray directly on face
  • Reapply after swimming, sweating heavily, or wiping your face
  • Wash off when you go indoors; there’s no benefit to leaving it on overnight

Clothing Treatments

Permethrin-treated clothing provides excellent supplemental protection. Unlike skin repellents, permethrin is an insecticide that kills insects on contact. Treated clothing retains effectiveness through multiple wash cycles. Pre-treated clothing is available, or you can treat your own with permethrin spray.
