Understanding How Repellents Work

Most EPA-registered repellents work not by killing mosquitoes but by masking or interfering with the chemical cues mosquitoes use to find hosts. Female mosquitoes locate hosts through a combination of CO₂ (exhaled breath), lactic acid and other skin volatiles, heat, and visual cues. Repellents disrupt this detection mechanism, making you effectively invisible to them.
