The “best” ant killer depends entirely on which species you’re dealing with and where the colony is located. The biggest mistake homeowners make is grabbing a spray that kills the ants they can see without addressing the colony. A week later, the ants are back — because the queen and thousands of workers are still alive underground.

Baits vs. Sprays: The Fundamental Choice

Baits work through secondary kill — worker ants pick up the bait and bring it back to share with the colony, eventually reaching and killing the queen. This is slower (days to weeks) but eliminates the colony.

Sprays and dusts provide immediate, visible kill of ants on contact but have no effect on the colony. They’re appropriate for:

  • Emergency situations (fire ant attack, large visible nest)
