Cockroaches: Identification and Control Guide
About Cockroaches
Cockroaches are among the most resilient and reviled household pests. They contaminate food and food preparation surfaces, trigger asthma and allergies (their shed skins and feces contain powerful allergens), and can mechanically transmit bacterial pathogens including Salmonella and E. coli. A German cockroach female can produce 300-400 descendants in a single year, which is why populations can go from a few to thousands in months.
Identification
German cockroach β The #1 indoor pest cockroach. About Β½ inch long, tan to light brown with two dark parallel stripes behind the head. Strictly indoor species; found in kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere warm and moist. Cannot survive outdoors in most climates.
American cockroach β Also called the water bug. 1.5-2 inches, reddish-brown, with a yellow figure-eight pattern on the shield behind the head. Primarily outdoor species that enters homes from sewers, tree hollows, and crawl spaces. Common in the South.
Oriental cockroach β Dark brown to black, 1 inch, and shiny. Strongly associated with moisture. Often enters through floor drains and crawl spaces. Called the βwater bugβ in some regions.
Brown-banded cockroach β Small (Β½ inch), with two lighter bands across the wings. Unlike German cockroaches, these prefer drier, warmer areas throughout the home β inside electronics, in closets, near the ceiling.
Signs of infestation:
- Seeing live cockroaches (especially during daylight β severe infestation)
- Dark fecal spots and smear marks along walls and in corners
- Musty, oily odor in heavily infested areas
- Egg cases (ootheca) β brown, purse-shaped capsules found in cracks and crevices
Prevention Tips
- Eliminate food sources β Clean up crumbs immediately, store food in sealed containers, donβt leave dirty dishes overnight
- Reduce moisture β Fix all plumbing drips, use exhaust fans, consider a dehumidifier in humid spaces
- Seal entry points β Caulk around pipes, seal gaps in walls, check for openings where utilities enter
- Remove clutter β Cardboard boxes and paper piles provide harborage. Use plastic bins for storage
- Regular inspections β Check under sinks, behind appliances, and inside cabinet hinges for early signs
Treatment: Gel Bait Is the Gold Standard
For German cockroaches, gel bait placed in small dots in cracks, crevices, and along drawer slides is far more effective than spray. Apply pea-sized amounts every 6-12 inches in activity areas. Never spray pesticides near bait β repellents cause bait avoidance.
For large outdoor species (American, smoky brown), perimeter treatments and granular baits around the foundation reduce the pressure of entry.
When to Call a Professional
- German cockroach infestations in multi-unit buildings (requires building-wide treatment)
- Infestations in commercial kitchens
- Failure to respond to 3-4 weeks of bait treatment
