Matching Products to Nest Location

The right wasp and hornet product depends primarily on where the nest is located:

Aerial nests under eaves or in trees: Aerosol sprays that shoot 15-20 feet allow you to treat from a safe distance. Look for products with jet spray capability — not just mist.

Underground nests: Use dusts or drench-style liquid treatments. Pyrethrin dust applied into the entrance in the evening is highly effective. Some homeowners flood the hole with soapy water, though this is less reliable.

Wall voids: This is the most challenging situation. If you can access the void from the exterior, dust applications work well. If not, drilling a hole to access the void may be necessary. Why Timing Matters

Wasps are most active during daylight hours. At night, foragers return to the nest, making evening treatment most effective for catching the entire colony. However, nocturnal treatments require care — use a red-lens flashlight, as wasps respond minimally to red light.

Temperature also matters. Cool nights (below 50°F) make wasps sluggish and less likely to sting, making treatment easier.

After Treatment: Monitoring and Removal

After treating a nest, wait at least 48 hours before approaching the area. Worker wasps that were away from the nest when you treated will return and may be agitated. Once all activity has stopped, remove the nest (wearing gloves and protective clothing) to prevent secondary pests like carpet beetles from moving in to feed on nest material.
