Bed Bug Prevention Tips for Travelers
December 10, 2025 Β· Regional Pest Guide Team Β· bed-bugs prevention
Bed bugs have made a dramatic comeback over the past two decades. These resilient pests donβt discriminate β they infest five-star hotels just as readily as budget motels. The key to avoiding them is knowing what to look for and how to protect yourself.
Key Strategies
- Inspect the mattress seams, headboard, and nightstand before unpacking. A small LED flashlight makes inspections faster
- Pull back sheets and look for tiny dark spots (fecal stains) or reddish-brown bugs about the size of an apple seed
- Keep luggage on hard surfaces or luggage racks β never on the bed or upholstered furniture
- Use hard-sided luggage when possible β bed bugs can hide in fabric folds of soft bags
Additional Considerations
- When you return home, unpack in the garage or laundry room and wash everything on high heat
- Dry all clothing on the highest heat setting for at least 30 minutes β heat kills bed bugs at all life stages
- Inspect your luggage thoroughly before storing it, paying attention to seams and pockets
- Consider using bed bug proof luggage liners for extra protection
Taking Action
The key themes here are hotel rooms inspection luggage protection. Start with prevention, monitor for early signs of problems, and escalate to targeted treatments only when needed. Most pest issues are far easier to prevent than to resolve after theyβre established.
The Hotel Inspection Routine
When you check into any hotel β regardless of star rating β take five minutes to inspect the room before settling in. Leave your luggage in the bathroom (a less hospitable environment for bed bugs) while you inspect.
Pull back the sheets and examine the mattress seams, particularly at the head of the bed. Look for:
- Tiny reddish-brown bugs (about the size of an apple seed)
- Small dark spots (fecal staining)
- Rust-colored smears on sheets or the mattress
- Cream-colored eggs or shed skins in mattress seams
Check the headboard, behind it if possible, and inspect the nightstand and furniture near the bed. If you find any evidence, request a different room on a different floor β bed bugs can travel floor to floor.
During Your Stay
- Store luggage on the luggage rack rather than on the floor or bed
- Keep luggage closed when not in use
- Hang clothes or use drawers only if the room checks out clean
- Do not put clothes on the bed
When You Return Home
Before bringing luggage inside, inspect all items in the garage or entryway. Wash all clothing in hot water (at least 120Β°F) and dry on high heat for 30 minutes minimum β this temperature kills all life stages of bed bugs.
Inspect your luggage carefully before storing it. Hard-sided luggage can be wiped down. Store luggage in plastic bags if youβre concerned about bringing pests into the home.
Early Detection at Home
If you suspect exposure, monitor your sleeping area with interceptor traps placed under bed legs. These catch bed bugs attempting to climb up to or down from the bed. Check them weekly.
Early infestations are far easier and cheaper to treat than established ones. A few dozen bed bugs caught early can be treated for a few hundred dollars. A full infestation in multiple rooms can cost thousands.
